1. In the calculation of the mean and median length of imprisonment, the categories Periodic detention, 15 years or longer, Life sentence and death sentence were not taken into consideration.
2. The total of convicted prisoners is comprised of the penal offenders and those who have been convicted due to unpaid financial obligations.
3. Before 1994 the categories of sentence 1,5-2 years and 2-5 years refer to sentences of imprisonmnet of 1,5-3 years and 3-5 respectively.
4. Before 2006, this category refers to sentences of imprisonmnet of 10 years and over. As of 2006, it refers to sentences of imprisonment of 15 years and over.
5. The Republic of Cyprus officially abolished the death sentence for murder in 1983 and for all other offences in 2002. The death sentence subsequently changed to life imprisonment.
6. The figures are based on the reports of the Prison Department.
